Freedom fighter Kaunda's monument mounted in Chilenje

LUSAKA: A monument depicting Zambia's first president Dr Kenneth Kaunda has been erected in Lusaka's Chilenje Township at the house where the veteran freedom fighter lived during the struggle for independence.

Although it was unveiled on April 28 to coincide with Kaunda's 87th birthday, barely a month from that date it was again to be used as a symbol for the freedom struggle during the Africa Freedom Day celebrations on May 25.

May 25 is the day on which the Organisation for African Unity (OAU), the forerunner of the African Union (AU), was formed in 1963 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, at the time when only 32 African countries were politically independen after decades of colonial rule. Kaunda, popularly known as 'KK' offered sanctuary to liberation and guerrilla fighters within Southern Africa.
