Francistown West: Portrait of traumatised electorate

Kanana, Kgaphamadi, Monarch, Bluetown form part of the seven 'God-forsaken' council wards of the Francistown West parliamentary constituency where 'Death' and 'Destitution' walk the dusty paths in broad daylight. The political representatives, the residents say, appear only on the eve of the general election, in search of the vote, writes Mmegi Francistown bureau's PATRICIA MAGANU

FRANCISTOWN: Many Francistown West voters, speaking early this week, threatened not to vote in the October general elections, most of them saying that they have no confidence in the political system.Francistown West consists of seven wards and the area is a BDP territory 100 percent and all the councillors and the MP are of the ruling party. Though one would assume that since the area is run entirely by the ruling party development would be simply streaming in quite the opposite is what is taking place at Francistown West. The constituency consists predominantly of low-income locations like Monarch, Kgaphamadi, Maipafela, Bluetown and Gerald.

Gerald -Kanana and Moselewapula:
The first stop was at Kanana Ward, which is part of Gerald Estates where the area councillor is Ace Ntheetsang. People who live outside of Francistown, who have heard of Gerald would be disappointed once they set foot in this fool's paradise. The roads into the area are not bad. One drives past the police station and the Botswana Housing Corporation offices before reaching deep into Gerald where the people who are experiencing the real problems are buried. The first person to talk to Mmegi was 24 year old Joseph Muller, who resides right at the beginning of Kanana. Muller was sitting at his rented home while keeping watch over his barbershop.
