Financial constraints halt conversion of industrial class workers

SELEBI-PHIKWE: The conversion of industrial class employees in government to permanent and pensionable has not been effected because of the financial constraints, Selebi-Phikwe mayor Godfrey Mbaiwa has said.

He explained during a full council meeting that the process was halted indefinitely by the Directorate of Public Service Management (DPSM) after the intervention of trade unions. It has been discovered that there are no funds to pay the workers' terminal benefits and a 15 percent pension contribution by the employer.

It is feared that the industrial class workers' pay will be affected adversely if they pay five percent contribution to the pension fund. Mbaiwa said industrial class employees were consulted on the matter in the presence of trade union representatives and they resolved that the conversion should be halted.
