Do our students need drugs to learn?

Quality education is often defined as education for a purpose, with meaning. It is holistic, the type that produces a well rounded individual.

This individual should be able to function, via application of the acquired skills, knowledge, attitudes, values, after the completion of learning programme. Learners must be able to apply the knowledge in the wider community and for their own benefit as well. This type of education begins at the very grassroots level, quality early childhood, and it is inclusive in nature not discriminatory. I must add that it builds as opposed to destruction of learners self esteem. In discussing quality education a UNICEF 2000 publication emphasizes the importance of safe and secure environments for learning. It also highlights the education process as well as learners needs among others.

Learners in every classroom are of diverse learning backgrounds, needs, attention span, interests etc. Whole class teaching therefore does not always takes cognisance of this.  I remember my own days at school where teachers would scream and beat up learners with poor attention span, restless learners or anyone who failed tests especially the Mathematics. For the developed world terms such as Attention Deficit Disorders, (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorders, (ADHD) became handy to describe the complex learners who fail to achieve.
