The nation has - for the past few months - been gripped by the euphoria of the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) congress. Never in the history of the BDP has the party been so deeply polarised. There were take-no-prisoner speeches made by senior party officials as they carpet-bombed each other. Newspapers letter pages were dripping with BDP hate speeches as democrats engaged in a match to out-do each other on who amongst them has the most poisoned pen. This was unprecedented in charting new political horizons in the BDP traditions and yet it was such a riveting contest.

No one was left a by-stander. Even non-BDP supporters found themselves engrossed in what was essentially a BDP cat-fight whose result is the re-arrangement of party's furniture.
