Diamond dreams deferred

As the mining town starts to feel the effects of the mining slowdown those who came here to offer their labour have nowhere to go, nothing to do, the hard times are here, writes TSHIRELETSO MOTLOGELWA

JWANENG: "Monna re tlile go sotlwa ke batho jaanong jaaka o bo o bona bo-radikontraka ba tswala jaana. Kana ba itse fela gore o tla a ya kae?" the man says staring into the far distance.

It is mid-afternoon and the early 60 man - he wouldn't say his name, warning, "You know what he (the boss) would do to me?" - has been standing in the verandah of the shop where he works waiting for his boss. Employed as a driver at a hardware store in the mining town, his job has been of recent vacillating between driving the truck, loading and unloading it, to now doing each and everything that his boss wants. It is something he has noticed but would not dare mention to his boss, a forever-angry man who owns the store.
