"The decision to discontinue initiation school instruction was a bad, bad idea," according to president of the customary court of appeal, Kgosikwena Sebele.

"What happens nowadays is that a young man comes over from Francistown in the dead of night and goes straight to his wife's place. He finds another man with his wife, gets irate, kills the wife and then commits suicide. That sort of thing would not have happened in the past," he says from his Gaborone office.

Initiation school prepared future husbands for married life. Part of the instruction was psychological preparation of initiates to be tolerable of the foibles of human nature.
