Child labour and its consequences

"This piece of work is dedicated to all those whose fundamental rights to education were stolen from them, whose playtime was ripped from them and those who never enjoyed their childhood.

"All those who, when you and I were playing, were working; when you and I were riding bicycles, were working; when you and I were going to school, were working. May they find some solace in this work," Tebogo Gopolang, a teacher from Mmadinare.
In July 2010, there were several media reports of a five-year old girl who was allegedly burnt with boiling water by a woman who had engaged her as a maid in Mmopane. The 38-year-old woman had employed the child to take care of her three-year old baby.

The woman was arrested while the victim was hospitalised in critical condition with second and third degree burns on her head. At Sir Seretse Khama Airport Police Station, King Tshebo said at the time that the woman could be charged with assault but would probably also face charges of employing child labour, among other charges.
