Botswana's economic success is predicated on peace

FRANCISTOWN: There was a time when people in Botswana thought war and any other form of strife that characterised the world they lived in was foreign to them.

Even to this day, Batswana are still known to express alarm when told of a terrible incident within the borders of their country.
Recently, a plane crashed in the Okavango, killing eight tourists. In the same period and region, another plane crashed, but mercifully no one was hurt. Last week, two aeroplanes belonging to the Botswana Defence Force (BDF) collided in mid-air and crashed into a primary school in Letlhakeng. One of the pilots succumbed to his injuries upon arrival at the hospital.

The incidents spawned considerable trepidation among Batswana, a people still unaccustomed to such tragedies. A Francistowner was heard to remark Botswana is beginning to be like other countries. Hence the horror of the story of parents who hacked their boy-child to death and dumped his body in a culvert led some people to wonder whether the perpetrators of such an unspeakably heinous crime were really Batswana.
