Alleluya Ntseku Mathumo: An Obituary

Francistown: Alleluya Ntseku Mathuma was the third born of Gwendouline Mathumo. He was born on Christmas day in 1947. He died on Novemder 29, 2010.

Mathumo did his primary education at Siviya. He worked at the South African gold mines before joining a local cooperative society as a driver. He left the job briefly and concentrated on farming but later worked for Kalahari Ford/Barloworld. In 2004, he won the Shashemmoke ward in Tonota South on a Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) ticket to become a councillor. He managed to defend the seat in the 2009 general election.

During his hey-day, Mathumo was a footballer of note and was popularly known as Funya or Mkhaya in football circles. He played as a defender for Hungry Lion FC in Francistown. This is the same position his son, Simisani Mathumo, plays for be Mobile Premier League giants, Township Rollers. Way back then there were only a few football teams in Francistown, namely, Tafic, Tafa and Great North Tigers.
