Abortion, infant dumping rampant

FRANCISTOWN: Abortion and baby dumping has become rampant, with the Botswana Police Service reporting that it recently recorded 35 cases of abortion and infant dumping countrywide in a period of just one week.

Given the severity of the punishment by the law in combating abortion and baby dumping offences, the number of cases is too high. Because these offences are usually carried out in surreptitious circumstances, there are also fears that many go unreported.

Central Police Station commander, superintendent Cyprian Magalela said punishment for abortion and baby dumping depends on the nature of the offence, adding that sentences range from three years to life imprisonment.
