A sneak view of the BDP primaries tomorrow

As the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) faithful battle for the party's blessing to enter the 2009 general elections in the opposition held constituencies tomorrow, the whole affair promises to be full of drama. Although some constituencies and wards will be smooth sailing with candidates standing unopposed, it is a different story in others.

Mmegi Staff Writer RYDER GABATHUSE examines some of the constituencies where candidates will slug it out in action-packed drama.
South east north: There are three candidates in this peri-urban constituency which has effectively become a part of the burgeoning conurbation of Gaborone. This is primarily a constituency of Batlokwa, who are made up of inter-related clans.
 The three candidates here are Elijah Katse, Shirley Segokgo and Walter Dube, who hardly need any introduction to the BDP faithful.

 
Reports coming from Tlokweng indicate that all is not well between the contestants, Segokgo and Katse having crossed paths one way or the other.
The party has registered complaints relating to alleged "unfairness" in the registration process from both of them, forcing it to return the voters' roll twice for verification. It is apparent that while the candidates here are supposedly seasoned politicians, they do not refrain from nitpicking.
