A once beautiful habitat destroyed

FRANCISTOWN: I feel helpless as I watch a once beautiful habitat deteriorate before my eyes. Born and bred in Area S location, in the Francistown East constituency, evoked in me an attachment to the Tati and Ntshe Rivers, which guard this low-income township from the north and western sides.

In fact, Area S is a tiny location, situated at the confluence of these mighty rivers. The pride and beauty of our rivers has been stolen, and it is a sad reality that what was once magnificent has gradually lost its ambience.

Today, a vast expanse of the Tati and Ntshe Rivers has diminished to mere streams. The dry riverbed has developed reeds, huge thickets of eucalyptuses, camel-thorn trees and tall grass. The sand has been depleted, no stagnant waters, and no happy frogs singing. As a result, the rivers have become a hideout for thieves. It seems all attempts by the city council to de-bush the rivers are failing as the plants continue to grow.
