What this country owes him

We have witnessed in the past week scenes in South Africa which have never previously occurred anywhere in the world.

One British TV commentator did tentatively mention Winston Churchill's funeral in England in 1965 as a means of comparison. In reality, the world today is very different from that of 1965 when air travel was in its infancy and the idea that world statesmen could fly in and fly out on the same day and still be home for breakfast next day belonged to something out of Jules Verne.

It would be understandable to assume that the world was at one in the way that it reacted to Mandela's death. In fact, this cannot possibly be the case.
