Where is democracy?

The democracy maturity levels in some parts of Africa are frighteningly low and suspect to say the least. The presidential elections in Nigeria and the arrest of opposition leader Kizza Besigye in Uganda are two cases in point.

After the weekend elections in Nigeria that saw incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan sweep the stakes there have been bloody clashes, resulting in loss of lives, destruction of property, and looting.

In the Northern region, which is the stronghold of Muhammed Buhari, Jonathan's main challenger, there has been chaos. Thousands of families have been displaced. The real reason is that Buhari's supporters cannot accept any other person other than their own anointed son. This has now degenerated into tribal and religious clashes mainly between Muslims and Christians.
