When will the stunts ever end?

It has now become common to see television images of President Ian Khama making what can best be described as outrageous promises to villagers during his walkabouts across the country.

The latest of these propaganda stunts made the Btv news bulletin on Sunday evening.  There was Khama unabashedly making pronouncements of his own preferences in cattle identification systems before a Mahalapye Kgotla audience that he treated as though it was made up of suggestible children.

Okay, perhaps nothing really new there. But the rub in this is that it seems Khama is seeking to turn an existing policy on its head without the benefit of consultation with neither Parliament nor cabinet. In this, the President wants to appear to be the peerless democrat who goes straight to the masses as the ultimate decision-makers and beneficiaries of policy, in the process upstaging the Minister of Agriculture whose business it should be to initiate conversation involving an important matter such as the one under discussion.
