We all witnessed history in the making on Thursday evening when an 18-year old lad from Marobela nearly brought the world to its knees in raw awe when he came breathing down the neck of record-breaker David Rudisha towards the finish line of their Olympic 800m final.

Rudisha might never have run a race like that if a teenager from the back of beyond in the athletics world had not come zooming like a bat out of hell nano seconds behind him. What the world saw was a catalyst that drove Rushida to break the world record as he himself broke the national record, exceeding his personal best in one inspired swoop.

A few days earlier, this nation had been thrown into a bout of depression and subsequent name-calling after world favourite for the women 400m final, African champion and Maun-born Amantle Montsho failed to grab a medal.
