We need Whistleblowersďż˝ Protection Act

In one of his State of the Nation addresses President Ian Khama made a promise that the government was in the process of drafting a Whistleblowers’ Protection Bill, which will be debated in Parliament.

It was three or four years ago when he first made the announcement. Later, in another SONA, he announced that the drafting of the Bill was at an advanced stage. We hope that the Bill will be presented before Parliament in the winter meeting of the House, or latest, in November.

This law will obviously complement other oversight institutions such as Parliament, the Auditor General’s office, the Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee, as well as the Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime. These are some of the institutions that can elevate us to a true democratic state. Advanced democracies have put in place mechanisms to hold everybody accountable, including those in power. There ever-increasing reports of suspected corrupt activities.
