We need a food safety authority

Somewhere in this paper we carry an article about the practice of brining of poultry in our country.

Brining is a worldwide practice, we are told, hence we have no intentions whatsoever to condemn it or try in any way to demonise it. We still do not know the circumstances that prompted the recent raids, since the police have declined to shed light on the incidences. It is possible the police were acting on a tip off from concerned members of the public, or competitors who couldn't stomach watching some substance being administered into the food meant for public consumption.

Just last week, in the United Kingdom (UK), a popular sandwich/burger brand was found to contain horsemeat and pork hence the product was immediately recalled to allow the authorities to carry out their own investigations. In situations like these, it is the customers who suffer greatly for they have been made to eat things that go against their religion, health and other personal beliefs.
