We doff our hats to Vaka

When former CEO of BIHL, Regina Vaka-Sikalesele, fired a broadside at her hosts at a dinner in her honour at GICC on Tuesday evening this week, she was inviting everyone to what should be a period of an objective analysis and a critical assessment of multinational corporations that operate in our country as partners in development.

Portraying Sanlam as a crucible that is decidedly hostile to the interests of Batswana, she characterised its relationship with BIHL in terms of "an inherent conflict" purposefully engineered from Cape Town to undermine the Botswana company.

In her no-holds-barred speech to the genteel audience, Vaka-Sikalesele took on the majority shareholder in BIHL for bleeding Batswana dry by expatriating profits made in their country to develop other economies. Also at the heart of her torrent was how Sanlam is using Botswana as the proverbial cash cow by means of a systematic expatriation of excess capital by declaring special dividends.
