Two societies unravel

Government primary schools re-opened this week despite the absence of teachers who are still on strike.

But because the children are young and of callow mind, the absence of teachers gives them ample time to indulge their predilection to frolic. Students of government secondary schools also remain barred from school while their counterparts at English medium schools are back in class. This is a situation that should not be allowed to go on endlessly because it is only a few months before the young people face the harsh realities of life after school.

Hence we appeal to all stakeholders in the education of our children to come to a compromise and end the stalemate. What is going on is not dissimilar to the introduction of new liquor trading hours in 2008 that allowed lodges, motels and hotels to operate for extended hours because the patrons of such places are wealthy Batswana.
