Too many security companies

Worsening crime in Botswana is a serious concern. Crimes ranging from cattle rustling, house burglary, to violent crimes such as rape and robbery are on a forward march.

These crimes have translated into the mushrooming of security companies. In the past security companies have been the preserve of businesses, but with the worsening crime situation even individuals rely on private security for personal protection and that of their property.Criminals have opened a huge lucrative industry and that is why every 'Jack and Jill' wants to set up his or her own security company.

It is a fat cash cow. People live in fear of criminals. There are thousands of young men and women looking for employment. When you have these two, you have a recipe for desperation and that is why out of desperation people latch onto anything that has the badge of 'security'.The trouble is, a lot of these security companies do not have any idea about security and it would seem what matters most to some of them is the urge to make money. It is gratifying that the Office of the President has spoken out against the increasing number of security companies.
