Time to deepen our democracy

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has been holding stakeholders' workshops throughout the country. Such workshops are fitting given that 2009 is an election year.

The IEC has been revisiting the code of conduct aimed at guiding politicians as they go about what promises to be a heated campaign.  It is, therefore, critical that politicians and other stakeholders are reminded how to conduct themselves during electioneering.

Generally Batswana, obviously because of their peaceful demeanor, have always conducted peaceful elections.  However, with the increasing intolerance particularly from government, it is important that we revisit that culture of tolerance that is unique to this country.
