The press must shape up

Celebrations of the World Press Freedom Day today comes at a critical time for the international and local media. Never before has the press, particularly in Botswana, been confronted with challenges that are pertinent to its very existence.

Botswana is undergoing a transformation that has brought a number of unprecedented challenges and changes that the modern press should confront squarely. This is necessary if the local media is to enjoy Press Freedom without creating skepticism and questions about its role in Botswana and the World.

Botswana, like other countries, has not been an exception when it comes to harassment - even wanton beating of journalists. It is time that journalists use the World Freedom Day to recommit themselves to safeguard democracy and the national interest at a time when Botswana is undergoing a major transformation and the pitfalls and land mines that journalist have to toil under.
