The President must open up

President Ian Khama is in Berlin, Germany, on an official visit, so we are told.

This is one of his rare international visits since he assumed power in 2008. It is commendable that the President is slowly but surely realising that Botswana will not survive if she continues to isolate herself from the international community.  He has visited other countries like the United Kingdom (UK), United States of America (USA), Algeria, Ghana, Mozambique, and Cuba among others. He is yet to attend the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York and the Africa Union (AU) Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, but we hope that one day he will find time to do so. Apparently Khama is a slow learner and we appreciate it.

Being a democracy that we are, we still believe that there is much that needs to be done around the issue of information dissemination to the public, on whose behalf the President is able to visit these countries. We are of the view that the President should give the nation feedback on his trips in the form of press briefings, state of the nation address, or even through the budget.  We are saying this at a time when the country's main investment arm Ð the Botswana Development Corporation (BDC)  is under investigation for allegations of corruption in which millions of the taxpayers' money were siphoned. Before all these allegations came to light, there was a time when BDC officers travelled to China and other countries looking for investors, on behalf of this nation and in its name.
