The police should uphold not break the law

A lot of revelations have been made at the ongoing proceedings of the Parliament Public Accounts Committee, which is expected to wrap its work sometime this month before reporting to the House during the July sitting.

But what has been most shocking is a statement by the Botswana Police Service, whose representative told the PAC that they lent the Ministry of Local Government around P13million to pay the wages of Ipelegeng workers.

The ministry is yet to repay the ‘loan’, which was sourced from the Police Road Traffic Fines Fund. The transaction, which took place about two years ago, was not sanctioned by Parliament, as the norm in any democratic society – in conformity with principles of accountability, the rule of law, and coordinated movement of national resources.
