The pits!

Several newspapers have carried the story of a 17-year-old boy who drowned in a burrow pit left by illegal sand miners at Ditlhakane farmlands near Kumakwane Village just west of Gaborone last week.

Confirming the terrible incident, the police said illegal mining for sand is out of control and blamed it mainly on the low penalties the law levies on offenders. In fact, the police revealed that the scoundrels who haul river and pit sand to the city for massive profits are mainly aliens.

As the situation presently obtains, it encourages the reprobates to go on undeterred, carrying cash - as they do - to pay off the fines to instantly remove the nuisance that is the law.
