The P7 billion question

The population of the world reached seven billion people yesterday.

Considering that only in 1999, the world registered six billion people, it means in just a decade, the world has added another billion people. But for countries, bigger populations have meant less to share as resources diminished. One major problem confronting many African countries is availability of land.

Botswana, where the problem is largely artificial, is no exception. The point is that in much of the ancient continent, individual ownership of land by means of a title deed remains very much an alien craft. This is because being a basic factor of production, Africans have always approached land from a communal perspective and regarded it as something to sustain and advance the common good. Thus, for many societies, land has been handed down generations of succeeding communities rather than individuals.
