The new laws should be progressive

Sometime this week, the government-owned Daily News carried an article in which the Minister of Presidential Affairs and Public Administration Mokgweetsi Masisi reveals government's intentions to amend the Public Service Act of 2008 and bring the Freedom of Information Bill before the National Assembly. In the interview Masisi claims that the amendment of the Public Service Act is intended to enhance productivity and service delivery in the public sector.

It is common knowledge that the current government is at war with unions representing public servants, as evidenced by the unprecedented number of disputes before our courts, and the hostility that it has displayed towards them.

We have a record of instances where the government made unilateral decisions regarding the welfare of public servants, even though the Act prescribed the involvement of all stakeholders. We are just praying that the proposed amendment by Masisi and his company would not bring an end to the trade union movement in this country.
