The BDP government must own the BR mess

The Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) is fond of speaking with a forged tongue. It is a well-documented development that when the Economic Stimulus Package (ESP) was announced at a special congress, the BDP took all the credit. This was after President Ian Khama told the special congress that his government had found that it is time they tapped from the foreign reserves.

The BDP members and hangers-on praised themselves and the party following the announcement.  They pointed out that the ‘historic landmark announcement’, to quote the BDP secretary general, Botsalo Ntuane, was a clear demonstration that the BDP cared about Batswana.

He even said the ESP was a game changer. “Go and form companies and benefit. Opposition members should take advantage of this and also benefit.  The BDP is an equal opportunity party,” Ntuane told a press conference a day after Khama announced the programme. Ntuane is on record in advocating for a strong activist Central Committee. He said this means recalibrating their relations with government; the party must reclaim its authority over government. The party must lead government and not be subordinate as is the case presently, he wrote. He added that the voice of the party must be heard loud and clear on every single issue.
