Thank you, Afrobarometer

The 2008 study by Afrobarometer on perceptions and democratic governance has found that Batswana are committed to democracy, the Daily News reported yesterday. Another state owned media, Botswana Television, also aired the report in the Sunday evening news bulletin.

We have not had a chance to read the report yet, but we are satisfied with the good job that our brothers and sisters in the government media are doing.  This is despite the ever-present prospect of being fired or transferred for writing, speaking or broadcasting anything negative about their employer, the government.

People have always spoken against one-man rule that seems to have taken over our democratic society that our parents have protected for years on end. We have always enjoyed consultation, transparency, going to elections every five years, freedom of choice, freedom of association and most importantly, freedom of expression in every public forum.  But it seems that the majority of us are going to curse the day when Lieutenant General Ian Khama ascended to the leadership of this country.
