Swine flu: All must be alert

With confirmed cases of H1 N1 said to be as high as 13, there is every reason for everyone to be worried and be vigilant. This is an outbreak and it could get worse if we do not exercise due care. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has raised its alert level to Phase 6, which is the highest in the pandemic alert levels.

Although WHO and other bodies say the alert level has been raised considering the spread of the disease than its severity, this should not make anyone complacent. Reports indicate that the flu is generally regarded as mild but that does not mean people should lower their guard particularly given that there have been scores of deaths caused by H1N1.

While some cautionary measures run against some of our ingrained cultural practices such as shaking hands and congregating, Batswana will be forced to acquire new habits just to stay healthy.
