Suspending Lesotho will not solve problems

The Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) Double Troika meeting held in Gaborone this week resolved to suspend Lesotho from the regional bloc’s official activities until the nation resolves its differences. This is scary, especially for the ordinary citizens who do not have state security machinery at their disposal.

Also disturbing is the fact that Basotho invited the regional body to intervene in helping resolve their historical differences. It is therefore, a source of concern that SADC is now saying they should resolve their differences. This is a test for the regional bloc on whether it is indeed in charge of its members, whether its decisions are binding, as well as whether it has strong policies to keep its members under check.

For instance, SADC should be able to impose targeted sanctions on the individuals who are actively disrupting peace and stability in the country. This can include travel restrictions, freezing of bank accounts, freezing of business transactions and others. Of course all these can only be possible if the regional bloc has such a policy, or legislation in place. What is most important is to ensure that perpetrators are left unpunished at the expense of ordinary people who want to continue living their lives without fear.
