Stopping the illegal miners

This edition carries a story about a police operation that was undertaken during the week to root out illegal sand miners in Gabane, just 10 kilometres from the city centre of the capital.

The operation was conducted from early evening to midnight on Tuesday.  In the course of it, at least four trucks were confiscated while several escaped.  In the same operation, five suspects were arrested while a few got injured while trying to flee police arrest.

The problem of illegal mining of gravel, river sand and pit sand is very common in the areas of Gabane, Kumakwane, Mogoditshane, Mankgodi and Boatle near Ramotswa.  These illegal miners have depleted grazing land, leaving gaping burrow pits that present a real and present danger to man and animal alike and will take a lot of resources to rehabilitate.
