Still long walk for women

Women across the world marked International Women’s Day yesterday, using the occasion to gauge their progress across economic, cultural and political lines. In Botswana, legislators introspected on their contribution to gender parity, while various civic organisations and diplomatic embassies also weighed in on the road travelled thus far.

It is generally agreed that Botswana is ahead of the field continentally and even internationally, with health, education and other critical policies and laws guaranteeing both the equal protection and promotion of women development from birth.

Guided by the Setswana adage, “mosadi ke thari ya sechaba” public policy has generally sought to both protect and empower the girl child, through equal access to health, education and career opportunities.
