Security at courts needs tightening

Just like two weeks ago, or a month ago, and even last year, members of the public witnessed suspects brought before courts, go on a rampage, threatening innocent people with violence.

And only recently, suspects escaped from police custody, robbed police officers - who were supposed to be guard their car - and escaped. They remained at large for weeks until they were caught after an extensive and indeed expensive search that involved almost all the law enforcement and security institutions in the land.

Last Wednesday, yet another of those spectacles unfolded before our very eyes. Suspects threatened everyone and anything in their path. The feeble attempts by prisons officials to rein them in only made them worse. Sadly these episodes are not limited to ordinary suspects either. The first day the Kalafatis murder suspects were brought to court at Block 3 Magistrate's Court they ran amok, attacking journalists, in full view of the security officers who were supposedly there to offer protection to members of the public.
