Save the girl child from these pests

Is the girl child in Botswana an endangered species? Witness this. In one week, the latest police crime statistics reports 15 cases of defilement - all involving girls. This means that two girls are defiled every day. Of the 15 cases, six are pregnant and because conception is rarely a one-intercourse affair, it means these defilements have been going on for sometime.

The fact that the victims' are between 12 and 15 years age means we have a situation on our hands.  These statistics come hot on the heels of another report that indicates rampant teenage pregnancy in Ngamiland where an 11-year-old has given birth.  Besides, we have recently carried worrying reports of sexual molestation of the girl-child by men with fingers pointing at the police and government agencies for failing to arrest the situation.

And lest we forget, up to 82 children are said to have died after the recent outbreak of diarrhoea in the country.  It is a cinch that a majority in the grim statistics are girls.
