SADC must wake up from deep slumber

This week former Mozambican president Joachim Chissano made stunning revelations that the Southern African Development Community (SADC) level of understanding of political systems in Madagascar leaves much to be desired.

The revelations were indeed a sad indictment on SADC and the leaders.  It is unbelievable that an organisation as old as SADC may be unable to comprehend the political landscape of its member state beyond just rumour and petty talk.  SADC is supposed to be at the core of regional political stability and security, as well as the welfare of its citizens.   In his presentation, Chissano revealed that a majority of Malagasy are in full support of their leader Andry Rajoelina, whom the SADC leaders treat like a leper and pariah.  They have called for his immediate departure from that country's highest office to give way to their preferred Marc Ravalomanana, in contrast to what the Malagasy people want.

In addition, Chissano shared his findings, as mediator in the impasse that Ravalomanana ruled that country with an iron fist, corruption and disregard for the constitution, and established laws therein.  Despite all these, SADC insists that Ravalomanana should be returned to office.  One wonders if Rajoelina is being victimised or shunned for the mere fact that he is a former discjockey (DJ) who is also youngest of all the leaders in the region.   In Botswana the young president has been labelled names such as "that boy" or "that DJ" by very senior government officials, even going to the extent of refusing to roll the red carpet for him, which is a protocol that should be extended to any visiting head of state.
