Retailing regulations need bite

This week the officials of the Department of Trade and Consumer Affairs reportedly raided a Tlokweng shop where they impounded expired commodities. They described their raid as a 'routine exercise'.

This is commendable.  Many businesses operate with impunity throughout Botswana in the full knowledge that their waywardness will either go undetected, or it will attract no penalties or even a slap on the wrist. 

The officer in charge of the Tlokweng operation reportedly urged consumers to lodge their complaints of the outlets' non-compliance with the ministry's toll free number 0800 600 760.
