Remembering 9/11 10 years on

Life is a valuable gift that needs to be cherished and protected at all costs.

Sunday, September 11 was not just an anniversary for the American government and its peoples to remember the catastrophe that befell them 10 years ago.  The terror attacks that saw the planes crashing through the twin towers in New York will remain an indelible mark on the minds of the American citizens and human society in the global village.

Not only America was affected, as the nearly 3,000 innocent people who lost their lives that horrible day were hundreds of citizens from over 90 countries.  Not only were they helpless women, children and men but they were also of various races and religious persuasions, hence making it a global terror that left the world in anguish.  No reasons, no matter how elaborate and well-coined, will justify the killing of such innocent victims.  The perpetrators in the mould of Osama Bin Laden and Al Qaeda, a terrorist movement that is notoriously popular for its hate against the US saw themselves playing the David role against Goliath, poking its finger in the eye of the giant US.  While we, the citizens of the world, were abhorred at this moral turpitude that threatened the roots of human existence, Obama and his ilk of gun-toting terrorists saw in the attack, victory and an opportunity for grandstanding in the global arena.  AK47 in hand, a bearded Bin Laden, draped in a camouflage jacket became an instant hit in the global media.  He became different things to different people.  Some, especially in terrorist groups saw a role model while the rest of the world was gripped by fear and anger.  This man had to be stopped.  And the US with the efforts of other countries was able to track and eliminate him from the face of the earth.  Afterwards a crackdown on his acolytes.  His death, though it might come as a relief of sorts to relatives of victims and the affected nations, does not mean that the spectre of terror itself has been eradicated.  For the past decade, the world has developed.  Technology, which has been hailed as a great platform for turning the world in a global village, also poses a threat to humanity.  Terrorists and other no good-doers also find in it a platform from which they can attack nations and people killing them en masse, as terrorists are wont to do.  It is, therefore, incumbent upon governments and intelligence service organisations to work together and ensure that a watertight defence is mounted around the globe.  Through cooperation among nations, where neighbours, friends and foes can come together and launch a frontal attack on terror wherever it manifests itself.
