Prevent cruelty to animals

It is not uncommon, even in the capital city of Gaborone, to see small trucks with cows trapped between metal bars by their necks, driving casually on the road.

This scene is becoming increasingly common as cattle farmers opt to sell directly to butcheries in the towns rather than to the Botswana Meat Commission.  There, their produce might be condemned without compensation.

This issue carries a story with the headline ‘Protect Domestic Animals’.  The reporter points out that “Botswana has signed on to the International Animal Protection Protocol, but unlike other signatories it fails to follow the guidelines of such protocols”.
