Pope, Muluzi off target

At a time when the Southern African region is enduring a battering, thanks to the mickey mouse installation of Andry Rajoelina as the head of state of the Indian Ocean island of Madagascar by the military, there is a breath of fresh air from Malawi.

The Malawi Independent Electoral Commission has rejected a bid by former President, Bakili Muluzi, to run as a presidential candidate. Malawians will go to the polls on May 19 2009.

Muluzi's candidature was rejected by the IEC on grounds that Muluzi had served his two terms and was therefore, not eligible to contest again. The constitution of Malawi, like many in emerging multi party democracies states that anyone in the position of president can only serve two terms. Former President Muluzi has been in office from 1994 to 2004 and according to the demands of the constitution of the land he has served his two terms. It would have been a traversty of justice if the IEC had allowed Muluzi to run even though it is clear that he has run his course.
