Please, Go And Register

Voter apathy seems to be entrenched in this country if the recent registration exercise is anything to go by. This is not a new thing as in the recent past very few people have been registering to vote let alone cast their vote on election day.

At the end of the initial registration period just over 300, 000 people had registered. This number was far below the expected number of eligible voters. The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) target is over 600,000. A supplementary registration kicked off on August 11 and it will run until August 31. We would like to urge all Batswana who are eligible to vote, to go and register if they have not done so. There are already reports that people are going to the registration centres in a trickle though the expectation was that those who missed the previous deadline would come forward to register in large numbers. We would like to urge Batswana who have not yet registered to go and register. This is the only available opportunity for people to register so that they can cast their ballots in the 2009 general election.
