Perceptions of corruption must be investigated

It might not have been officially confirmed that some magistrates and other public servants are engaged in practices that defeat the ends of justice. Yet, the extent to which such officers are perceived to be involved in wayward conduct is a cause for serious concern.

For sure, there should be no excuse whatsoever for the authorities to have not woken up and investigated incidents in which magistrates have allegedly taken bribes and stalled the delivery of justice. The authorities do not have to wait for hard proof to carry out an audit on the magistracy's perceived inclination to corruption.

To a large extent, perceptions of corruption undermine the ability of the magistracy to endear itself to the people and become an institution that the public have full confidence and trust in. Whether it is the police and prisons, there are complaints of corruption. Prisoners escape from jail under suspicious circumstances while the police drop charges on flimsy claims of lack of evidence.
