'Our Parliament, Our Pride'

We want join the call made by the Association of European Parliamentarians for Africa (AWEPA) that parliaments need more funding in order to enable them to play their oversight role efficiently.

As the supreme lawmaking body of any republic, a parliament must perform this task with diligence and distinction, especially as a check on the Executive where - almost everywhere - white-collar criminals often lurk in order to cream off contract money, take kickbacks and consolidate their nefarious networks as they corrupt systems down below.But for that to happen, there is every need to ensure that the institution is provided with adequate resources.

In order to enact laws that cater for the needs and wants of the greater majority, many of whom live in abjection in rural areas, parliamentarians must make sure that the House has its finger on the pulse of the people it purports to serve. Failure to maintain such rapport with the various publics that make up the nation could result in laws that only serve elites, the people's representatives included.
