Our sister publication, Mmegi, in its Friday edition carries a story about a sponsorship deal which looks to have failed even before it started. Nike was recently paraded as the technical sponsor of the Premier League.

When the sponsorship was launched it was revealed that Nike will provide two sets of kit to all the 16 teams in the league as well as soccer balls. The Sponsors, BDV Sports Company, was similarly going to provide kit to the First Division teams.

This was going to be a welcome development for the First division sides that have gone for years without a sponsor since the departure of MedRescue. For the Premier League it looked like they were going to be taken for a ride as the value of the sponsorship is far too below expectations. Botswana football deserves more than what other people think.
