Opposition: loaded, cocked and aiming ... whose foot?

And so it begins. Botswana's opposition in the Botswana National Front (BNF), Botswana Congress Party (BCP), and the Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD) has loaded the gun and is now pointing the barrel directly at its own foot.

It is a situation all too familiar for those anxious citizens who, in the past, have watched the opposition make all the noise about why the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) should be voted out, only for them to present victory to 'Domkrag' on a silver platter. We must not be construed to be calling for a no-vote for the BDP. However, we believe in a strong opposition whose presence in Parliament, local government and other structures will cause government to be more accountable. Now as before the opposition is at again.

Why, the parties are currently negotiating a cooperation model that should keep the BDP on its toes. Or so the parties promise. We understand though that already there are sharp differences among the leaders. Differences that could undermine the negotiations. We have said it before and say it again: victory or defeat will hinge on whether or not in proposing whatever cooperation, the opposition leaders are able to shake-off the stench of arrogance and elitism that has always been the bane of opposition cooperation. Yes, there might be legitimacy to some of the suggestions by party representatives, but it is important that none should think his party is better than the others. Leaders should forget about the fact that their party has been branded or marketed in a particular manner or that it has a sure following in a given location. The idea should be to fashion a united opposition whose existence should ensure greater democracy in Botswana.  Common sense mandates that if the parties cannot craft and employ a convincing strategy that results in a working cooperation model it will be impossible for the nation to take them seriously. Forget about winning elections.
