Onus is on Kibaki on Kenyan deal

The bloodletting and political crisis that followed the flawed Kenyan poll in December 2007 appears to have finally been brought under control with the recent agreement between the two feuding parties.

The Kofi Annan-mediated power-sharing deal between President Mwai Kibaki and opposition leader Raila Odinga is a welcome development.

The deal that comes after five weeks of intense negotiations is likely to see Odinga becoming prime minister with executive powers. Had Kibaki not stolen the December poll, Kenya could have been spared unnecessary deaths of more than 1,500 people and the displacement of hundreds of thousands.
