MPs must not rest on their laurels

The third meeting of the second session of the 11th Parliament opened on Monday with little fanfare. The July meeting is strictly to do with Parliament business on bills, Private Members’ bills, motions and government.

It is usually the shortest, lasting just over a month.  A lot has happened in the last couple of months when Parliament last went for recess.  We, therefore, expect the legislators to be enthusiastic in finding solutions to the challenges that we are facing as a nation.  Pertinent amongst them are the recent accidents at BCL Mine in Selebi-Phikwe, one of which claimed four lives.  Along with the accident, incidents that took place prior to and successive of the aforementioned, have had the nation talking and it will be a disaster if legislators fail to make their input to draw to a concrete resolution.

Of course, the Francistown West Member of Parliament, Ignatius Moswaane has a motion in which he requests government to establish a Commission of Inquiry into the operations of the mining sector to find out why the businesses open and close within a short period of time after taking away minerals.
