Tomorrow the labour movement around the world will be commemorating what is known as May Day or Labour Day. In Botswana, May Day could not have come at a better time.

Various government staff associations have transformed into unions following the ratification of progressive conventions of the UN's International Labour Organisation (ILO). This was a significant gain for labour in Botswana.

The transformation of these associations into unions has changed labour dynamics in Botswana. This has improved labour's bargaining power. But what is perhaps more important is that what was originally thought to be a small labour force has been given a shot in the arm.
